Side 5
On Tuesday, I went to the library instead of to school.
I had never cut class without a bunch of my friends dragging me out of the school gates before. But I was feeling tired of being responsible and 'mature' when all I got for my efforts were drunk girls calling me names and my father shutting me out of his life. Also, Curtis still hadn't called after our fight about Chocolate Hearts. An hour or two of Jane Austen would help me feel less blue about things. Remembering that polite conversation and gallant men had once existed would bring me peace.
But when I got to the Classics section of the public library – there were two libraries at Linbury, the smaller, upscale, exclusive Rochester Library and the more proletarian Linbury Public Library – I wasn't so sure I would find peace there, because Zach Gellar was sitting there, long legs curled up under him on a big plush ancient-looking armchair, buried in a dusty copy of Charlotte Bron…

PE. The one academics-related thing at Thornton I found mindnumblingly uninteresting and difficult.
"Kick the ball, Ward!" Coach McKay, the burly, beefy soccer instructor, yelled at me the Monday morning after Chocolate Hearts.
I stood there on the grass, staring apprehensively at the black-and-white soccer ball in front of me. I dreaded PE – I didn't know what had possessed me to pick soccer as my mandatory team sport, except for the fact that it sounded better than lacrosse, which I hadn't even heard of at WHS, and running for the track team, which I was sure to be even worse at.
  "Kick, Goddammit!" Coach McKay bellowed.
I shot my foot out in a wild arc and missed the ball by a good six inches. At the other athletic, well-groomed girls in my class sniggered, I sprinted – or walked, actually – back to the edge of the field, trying to maintain an impassive expression. On the bright side, my turn at humiliation on the…

READ CHAPTER THREE, SIDE 6 AND 7 HEREI'd gone to the Spring Formal at WHS with Curtis my freshman year. Rachael, who'd gone with a seventeen-year-old punk rocker from the Meatpacking District, and I had spent the day of the dance getting facials and manicures done, and the week before the dance shopping for dresses at vintage stores. Dad and Ann had been home when the punk rocker and my boyfriend arrived at our apartment; he'd offered them Cokes and discussed basketball with Curtis and Eric while Erica had watched us get ready. Afterwards, Ann had taken a zillion pictures and teased Cutis. At the dance, we'd spiked our punch with brandy and goofed around on the dance floor before Curtis had all but carried me into our limo to make out to Frank Sinatra. It had been one of the best nights of my entire life, and I'd kept my midnight blue dress as a memento.
As I slipped into it for Chocolate Hearts in my room, I…
